Can You Erect A Customised Steel Building At Your Home?

Updated: Jan 27

While many of the enquiries we receive for portal frame buildings are for commercial use, there’s no reason why you can’t erect a steel building on your domestic property if you need some more space.

In fact, steel frame buildings have a multitude of uses that can suit homeowners just as well as they suit businesses.

What can you use a steel building for at home?

One of the most common uses of domestic steel buildings is as a workshop – a particularly popular option for those who either don’t have a separate garage or who have outgrown this space.

According to research from the RAC, over half (53 per cent) of drivers with garages state that they never park their cars in them.

Instead, these spaces are more commonly used for storing items like tools, garden furniture, push bikes or even camping equipment. If you’re the kind of person who enjoys DIY, you may well want more space than your garage offers.

In that case, a steel-frame building can be the ideal workshop. What’s more, these types of buildings can be insulated if you wish, ensuring they stay warm in the winter months and don’t get too hot in the summer.

You can also choose a building with roof lighting panels to let plenty of natural light into the space without compromising on security.

Another common use for domestic steel buildings is as a home office. Again, the ability to fully light and insulate this kind of building means you can turn it into a separate space for your work at the end of your garden or driveway.

We enable you to customise many aspects of your steel building, including whether you’d like additional windows, personnel doors or roller shutters as part of your design.

The insulation and cladding options are also customisable, so that you can design a building that will suit your purposes.

How do you erect a steel building at home?

Another great reason to opt for a portal frame building for your home office space, workshop or any other use (home gym anyone?) is that you can erect the structure yourself.

Our steel kit buildings come with a full set of installation instructions, along with all the fixtures and fittings you’ll need to build a strong, durable steel building at your property. You’ll also receive general arrangement drawings to give you all the guidance you’ll need.

We also offer other installation services if you don’t feel comfortable going it alone.

Alternatively, you could rope in a few friends to give you a hand and make a day of it.

Given that just over half of Brits (54 per cent) consider themselves to be capable at DIY, this may well be a project you feel happy attempting yourself. Of course, if you do want a bit of help, there is nothing wrong with asking for support.

Either way, you can have a customised building at your home that’s designed to fit the space you have available and with the end use of the steel building in mind.
